Balancing FOMO vs Fear of the Unknown…

I get this question all the time, June, when is the right time to start looking for a job. I think when people ask me that, they expect me to say right now of course. Since I am a recruiter, I am expected to promote job hunting.

The truth is everyone’s situations are different. It is a fine balance between FOMO (the Fear of Missing Out) versus the Fear of the Unknown.

When a few of your coworkers leave the company you are in, especially the ones that have not been there as long as you have, most people will start to have a major case of FOMO. They are afraid that they maybe missing out of the opportunity of their lifetime! Then they start to look, land a job, right before they have to resign, they start to think, am I making the right choice? What if the new place is 10 times worse? Fear of the unknown sets in.

The worst possible situation is when someone starts to look, gets an offer, tries to resign but then decides to take a counteroffer to stay where they are at. In these situations, they burn 2 bridges at the same time, it is really a no-win situation. I always advise people to think it through before applying for a new job.
