My own experience

I coach people on how to resign all the time, this is the story of one of my own resignation…

I thought about it for weeks, talked it over with everyone I know ad nauseum. I decided to leave the company I was with, found a good job, signed the offer. Then came the day I needed to resign. The day before I typed up two things, what I always tell people to do:

1. My formal resignation letter.

2. My list of all the things I can get done during my resignation period and what I cannot, all the notes of what needed to be done after.

All the questions whirling in my head: am I doing the right thing? What if this isn’t the right decision? I’m leaving all my clients here, what if I can’t get new clients? What if new clients don’t like my new company? Endless questions that just won’t stop.

I signed the offer though and I won’t ever go back on my word. So I made 2 copies of both those documents, walked in Monday morning, pulled my boss into a room and said, I’m formally resigning. Effective immediately.

I thought to myself, I’ve got this. I help people through this all the time. There’s nothing they can throw at me that I haven’t seen before! Was I ever wrong!

My boss looked back at me, teary eyed, said some things to try to get me to…
